Donald Trump reminds me of Joan Rivers.
She shocked people with politically incorrect comments (“The only time a woman has a true orgasm is when she’s shopping”) and a willingness to insult people whom others wouldn’t. (On Elizabeth Taylor’s weight gain: “Elizabeth Taylor pierced her ears and gravy ran out.”)
People found her frankness refreshing. She became Johnny Carson’s regular substitute host on The Tonight Show and got her own Tonight-like series.
But she didn’t stay on top the way that Carson did. Part of the problem was probably the fault of her network, and part was probably just plain sexism. But I think that some of it was that after a while, people didn’t like swallowing a regular diet of acid.
She ended up on basic cable — still a star, but no longer as popular as she used to be.
It’ll be interesting to see if the same thing happens to Donald Trump.
