Donald Trump has vigorously denied knowing Vladimir Putin. Whether or not that’s true is an interesting question.

But why deny it? To conduct diplomacy or fight wars, a president needs to know and understand powerful foreign leaders like Putin.

Trump may be trying to say that he’s not “Putin’s puppet,” to use HIllary Clinton’s phrase. But admitting that he has no first-hand knowledge of a massive superpower’s ruler does not make Trump seem qualified for the presidency.
