My colleagues in the news media speculate a lot on how Donald Trump thinks, what he thinks, and if he thinks. Seems to me that we didn’t get so much commentary about Barack Obama’s thought processes. Instead, we got commentary about his identity.
Was he a radical socialist, a professorial lecturer, a feckless weakling, a canny Chicago pol, a charismatic firebrand, an appeaser of our enemies, a racial extremist bent on dividing the nation, all of the above, or something else?
Observers loved to argue about who Obama was, just as they now love to argue about how ideas and emotions ricochet through Donald Trump’s skull.
Quite a difference.
