Donald Trump’s presidency has changed me. Before he became president, I felt a warm comradeship with my fellow Americans. A few on the far fringes of the extreme left and right were unspeakably hateful, but the rest were more or less okay. I could argue with them and support politicians who would squash their proposals, but they were decent people who wanted the same things as me: safety and prosperity for every law-abiding citizen. The racism, sexism, and other bigotries that have scarred this country seemed to be gradually receding with each new generation.
Then I saw tens of millions vote for Donald Trump. As his presidency wore on, polls showed a thick chunk of my country accepting or even supporting his lies, ignorance, egomania, cruelty, and betrayals.
I don’t think I can see my country the same way again.
Has the Trump presidency changed you?
